Is Buying A Vacation Home Worth It?
Are you planning on buying a vacation home? If so, make sure you're ready.

So you’re thinking of purchasing a vacation home? A place where you can travel to and call home every once in awhile. The question you have to ask yourself is “Is it worth it?” Depending on your situation it can be either a hassle or a great opportunity for your family.

If you own a home already, you will already know the maintenance that is involved. From leaky roofs to cutting the grass, it can take up a lot of time. This is just the beginning when it comes to your home away from your home.

Before you think about signing the papers on your vacation home, you will want to look over your budget. You will want to make sure that this home can be affordable to your family. If you’re already in bind with money and you think this will be a great investment opportunity, don’t do it! You will just dig yourself in a deeper. If your budget is fine and you have the money to afford your vacation home, that’s great! Experts say that your home mortgage shouldn’t be more than 25-30% of your take home pay.

If your first home and second home mortgage is less than 30% of your take home, you’re already on the right step. In fact, if you do plan on making this purchase, you can make money on your home by renting it out to either family or friends or tourists who are interested in the area. Of course, those come with the consequences but you may hire rental firms that do all of the dirty work for you.

The problem you may see with your rental home is that you’re going to have to make sure someone can check up on it every once in a while if you only visit it every few months. If this vacation home is only a few hours away, this shouldn’t be a problem. If you intend on buying this home a thousand miles away, it’s always best to have someone you know nearby so in case an emergency does happen, someone can scope out the scene.

Besides emergencies, you’re going to want to make sure that your home is kept up so that it looks like someone is living in it. You will have to be courteous to others because you have to remember just because you’re not there 24/7, not everyone else around you is too. Lawn services and a babysitter is all you’ll need for this.

Vacation homes have tons of benefits such as not having to worry about renting a hotel or worrying about being unfamiliar with the area. Like your home, you will become very familiar with your surroundings knowing where everything is making it easier for you. Unlike a hotel though, you won’t have the room service or bed sheets changed.

When making this big purchase you will have to keep in mind that you won’t be able to travel as much as you would like to because you’ll almost feel obligated to go to your home once a year eating up some vacation time. This can cause some stress in the family if no one wants to go. If your family were a fan of traveling to the same area every year, then this would be the best opportunity possible. Buying a vacation home has a ton of upsides and if you can afford it, go for it!
