The CD market is steadily going down and if you haven’t heard already, Bank of America is in talks with Countrywide on buying them out.  For a few months now, Countrywide has been on the brink of bankruptcy.  Countrywide does offer very competitive rates but a lot of investors are steering clear of them because of this issue.

Other banks that took some huge tumbles this week were –

Corus’ 1 year CD went from 5.10% to a 4.69%

E*Trade’s 3 month CD went from 5.00% to 4.35%

The CD rate averages are out for the month of January of 2008.  CD rate averages tumbled once again.  Even though there’s not a big difference, every length has gone down unlike last month where a few stayed steady and some went up.   Below is a chart of how the averages went –

3 months:  5.09% to 5.03%

6 months:  5.18% to 5.11%

1 year:  5.09% to 5.02%

18 months:  4.88% to 4.80%

2 years:  4.95% to 4.85%

3 years:  4.90% to 4.82%

5 years:  5.03% to 4.98%
